Louisiana irises are fast-growing plants that require regular division, repotting, and ample fertilizer to thrive. Their large and spectacular flowers are best suited to warm locations and may struggle in colder climates. In mild winters, they retain their evergreen foliage, although overwintered leaves may die off just as they bloom, so it is recommended to trim them back in early Spring. At maturity, they can reach heights of up to 24 inches.

In Autumn, after the foliage has died back, it is advised to trim the plants back to just above the water surface. If trimming is left until spring, caution must be taken not to damage emerging shoots. Like all iris varieties, the tubers of Louisiana irises can be harmful if eaten.
