Product Description:
Planting Location: To successfully plant your Iris, it is crucial to select a location that receives full sun. In warmer climates, some afternoon shade is acceptable. When planting outdoors, ensure the soil has good drainage. If water collects in pools 5-6 hours after heavy rain, consider relocating or enriching the soil with organic materials like compost, ground bark, or decomposed manure. For container planting, keep in mind that Bearded Irises grow into sizeable, perennial plants with rhizomes that spread extensively over time. Therefore, choose a container with drainage holes that is at least 2 gallons in volume, such as a pot, barrel, tub, or urn.
Planting Technique: Late summer or early fall, when night-time temperatures reach 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, is the ideal time for planting Irises. Space the Iris rhizomes 8-12" apart and ensure they are positioned horizontally so that the tops are just poking above the soil surface, with roots spread out beneath. After planting, pack the soil around the Iris, leaving a portion of the rhizome and foliage exposed. In warmer climates, cover the rhizome with 1/2" to 1" of soil to protect it from sun damage. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once the initial watering is done, reduce water until roots develop and foliage emerges.
Caring for Growth: Bearded Irises should be watered regularly once foliage appears until approximately six weeks after flowering has ceased. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and after the first round of blooming to promote abundant flowers. For beautiful bouquets, cut a few blooms. Once the blooming season is over, trim back the spent flower stems, but leave the foliage intact. After the first hard frost, trim the foliage to around 6” above the rhizome, removing any yellowed or spotted leaves.
